Performance First

Don't Load the Video Player Until You Need It

Traditional YouTube and Vimeo embeds can load third-party player resources before a visitor ever watches the video. Deerwood Lazy Video replaces that initial player with a lightweight facade.

▶

Click-to-Load Player

The YouTube or Vimeo iframe isn't created until the visitor actually clicks the Play button.

⚡

Built for Performance

A tiny frontend script handles playback without loading the full third-party video player during the initial page load.

▣

Thumbnail Control

Use YouTube's automatic thumbnail or select your own local image. Vimeo uses a custom thumbnail for a clean pre-click load.

5

Divi 4 + Divi 5

One installer automatically loads the appropriate implementation for Divi 4 or the native Divi 5 builder.

◉

YouTube Privacy Mode

YouTube playback uses the privacy-enhanced youtube-nocookie.com domain by default.

↔

Multiple Aspect Ratios

Choose 16:9, 4:3, 1:1 or vertical 9:16 while maintaining reserved space to help prevent layout shift.

Simple by Design

How It Works

Your page stays lightweight until somebody actually wants to watch the video.

1

Choose Your Provider

Select YouTube or Vimeo, paste the video URL or ID, and choose the thumbnail you want visitors to see.

2

Display the Thumbnail

The page initially displays the video thumbnail and a lightweight CSS play button instead of the full video player.

3

Player Loads on Click

When the visitor clicks Play, the thumbnail is replaced by the appropriate YouTube or Vimeo iframe and playback begins.

Why We Built It

A Video Embed Shouldn't Slow Down Someone Who Never Watches It

Deerwood Lazy Video was created after seeing how much third-party video resources could affect otherwise fast Divi pages.

Instead of trying to optimize the video player itself, the plugin takes a simpler approach: don't load the player until it's requested.

  • No YouTube or Vimeo iframe before Play is clicked
  • No third-party video player JavaScript during initial page load
  • Local thumbnails can avoid pre-click video-provider requests
  • Reserved aspect ratio helps prevent layout shift
  • Tiny vanilla-JavaScript frontend loader

Choose Your Video Provider

Version 1.4 adds Vimeo alongside YouTube while keeping the same lightweight click-to-load approach.

YouTube

Automatic or Local Thumbnail

Paste a YouTube URL or video ID and use the automatic YouTube thumbnail, or select your own image from the WordPress Media Library. Privacy-enhanced playback is enabled by default.

Vimeo

Local Thumbnail + Click-to-Load

Paste a Vimeo URL or numeric video ID and choose a custom thumbnail from your WordPress Media Library. Vimeo isn't contacted until the visitor actually clicks Play.

Thumbnail Control

Keep the First Load Lightweight

You control what visitors see before the real video player is needed.

Convenient

Automatic YouTube Thumbnail

For YouTube videos, leave the custom thumbnail field empty and Deerwood Lazy Video automatically displays YouTube's maximum-resolution thumbnail.

Maximum Control

Local Custom Thumbnail

Select an appropriately sized and compressed image from your WordPress Media Library. Local thumbnails avoid contacting the video provider before Play is clicked. Vimeo uses this approach by default.

LCP Friendly

Control How Your Thumbnail Loads

Video near the top of the page? Prioritize it. Video farther down? Lazy load it.

Above Fold

Priority Loading

Uses eager loading and high fetch priority for videos that are visible when the page first opens. This is the plugin default.

Below Fold

Lazy Loading

Choose Lazy for videos farther down the page so their thumbnails don't compete with more important above-the-fold content.

One Installer

Divi 4 and Native Divi 5 Support

4

Divi 4

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the plugin work with Divi 4?

Yes. The unified installer includes the Divi 4 module and Visual Builder implementation.

Does it work with Divi 5?

Yes. The plugin includes a native Divi 5 implementation and automatically loads the appropriate version for your Divi installation.

Does it support Vimeo?

Yes. Version 1.4 adds Vimeo support. Select Vimeo as the Video Provider and paste a Vimeo URL or numeric video ID.

Does Vimeo load when the page opens?

No. Vimeo uses a custom thumbnail from your WordPress Media Library. The Vimeo player iframe isn't created until the visitor clicks Play.

Does YouTube load when the page opens?

The YouTube player iframe isn't created until the visitor clicks Play. If you use the automatic thumbnail, the thumbnail image itself is requested from YouTube. Using a local custom thumbnail avoids that pre-click YouTube request.

Why does Vimeo require a custom thumbnail?

Using a local thumbnail keeps the Vimeo implementation simple and performance focused. The image is served from your own website and Vimeo doesn't need to be contacted until the visitor clicks Play.

Should I use a custom thumbnail for YouTube?

You don't have to. The automatic YouTube thumbnail is convenient and works well. A properly optimized local thumbnail gives you more control and avoids the pre-click thumbnail request to YouTube.

What does Priority / Above Fold mean?

Use Priority when the video is visible near the top of the page. The thumbnail is loaded eagerly with high fetch priority. Use Lazy for videos that appear farther down the page.

Does the video autoplay?

Autoplay after the visitor clicks Play is enabled by default and can be turned off in the module settings.

Does it support YouTube Shorts?

Yes. The module accepts standard YouTube URLs, youtu.be links, embed URLs, Shorts URLs, live URLs and 11-character YouTube video IDs. The 9:16 aspect ratio is available for vertical video.

Is it free?

Yes. Deerwood Lazy Video for Divi is free and does not require a subscription.
